A driver died Monday evening after he was impaled on a chain-link fence pole in a bizarre Phoenix accident that shut Hatcher Road and 11th Avenue for the night, police said.

An unusual sequence of events started at about 6 p.m., according to Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos, when a northbound pick-up truck driver ran a stop sign at Hatcher Road and 11th Avenue.

The truck hit an eastbound sedan driven by a woman, Martos said.

"The sedan turned around and struck a pole," Martos said, causing non-life threatening injuries to the driver, who was transported to a nearby hospital.

The pick-up truck, meanwhile, also spun around and headed into a business parking lot about 75 yards south of the intersection, Martos said.

The truck "runs into a chain-link fence," Martos said. "The driver becomes impaled on a pole. He is no longer with us."

Meanwhile, a passenger in the pick-up fled on foot.

"The passenger is gone," Martos said.

Hatcher Road and 11th Avenue will likely be closed until midnight as police investigates the accident, Martos said.

"We don't know if alcohol was a factor," said Martos. "We don't know the (truck's) speed."
