Don't these government nannies have any real problems to solve.
Yes, I know running with a bunch of bulls is stupid and dangerous. But people don't need or want a government nanny at their side 24 hours a day like a mommy telling them what they are doing is dangerous. Injuries at ‘running of bulls’ worry Cave Creek By Philip Haldiman The Republic | azcentral.com Tue Oct 23, 2012 7:52 AM Cave Creek Mayor Vincent Francia will ask town officials to evaluate whether an annual “running of the bulls’’ should be allowed to continue in the town after several people were injured during the latest event last weekend. Two thrill seekers were taken with serious injuries to the hospital during the event on Saturday. At least six others were treated for minor injuries. Francia has asked staff to evaluate whether the town can prevent the event from happening next year. For the past two years, Cave Creek resident Collin “T.C.” Thorstenson has hosted the event on his private property near town landmarks Harold’s Corral and the Buffalo Chip Saloon. Francia said the fact that it takes place on private property takes a lot of the power away from the town. He is in discussions with the town attorney about how to handle the situation. “I’m not at peace that these types of injuries are taking place,” he said. “The town is a de facto host of the event. Even though we’re not sponsoring it, it takes place in our jurisdiction.” About 2,500 people watched the event, and 600 people ran, according to organizers. The event is the brainchild of promoter Phil Immordino, who has mounted his Americanized version of Pamplona, Spain’s event five times, the past two years in Cave Creek. Immordino’s event uses rodeo bulls instead of the more aggressive, sharper-horned bulls used in Spain. But, in response to bull runners’ complaints, Immordino brought in “bigger and badder” bulls this year, as he described them. Immordino said that the run is risky and that people understand what they’re getting into when they sign up but that, ultimately, he doesn’t want anything bad to happen. He is currently in talks with officials in St. Augustine, Fla., about holding a running of the bulls next year. Last year, the Cave Creek council pressed Immordino for higher insurance levels but eventually backed off because the event took place on private property. For the past two events, Immordino says he took out three $1million insurance policies — one by the event organizers, one by the bull owners and one by the landowner. Runners also have been required to sign waivers, giving up their rights to sue. |
