Tempe Fire Department, along with the Scottsdale Fire Department, will offer emergency preparation training for residents and community members beginning Oct. 4.

The training is part of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) federal initiative.

“CERT volunteers are trained by fire department personnel in areas like disaster preparedness, fire safety, treating injuries, and search and rescue, in hopes that they will be able to put these skills to use in the event of large scale and daily emergencies,” a press release states.

Classes will be 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 4 through Nov. 8 at the Thomas A. Hontz Police and Fire Training Facility, 911 N. Stadem Drive, Tempe. A final drill will take place 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 10. Classes are free, but advance registration required. Participants do not have to be Tempe or Scottsdale residents.

But every once and a while they screw up and these are my bitches about Wal-Mart shoes and Wal-Mart's return policy.

In the last couple of years Wal-Mart seems to have been selling a lot of defective shoes. To fix that problem Wal-Mart needs to get with the companies the produce those shoes and get them to minimize the number of defective shoes they produce.

Usually when I buy a pair of shoes from Wal-Mart they will last a year before they wear out and start to fall apart.

In this blurb I bitch about the last 3 pairs of shoes which I have bought from Wal-Mart which started to fall apart within 2 weeks after I bought them.

On paper Wal-Mart's return policy is also really great. If you don't like it they have a 90 day return policy with 100% satisfaction guaranteed.

Of course that policy is on paper only. When I returned the last 3 pairs of shoes I bought at Wal-Mart that fell apart within 2 weeks of buying them I was treated like a criminal when I tried to exchange the shoes.

Yes, I did exchange the shoes, but I didn't like being treated like a criminal when I tried to return the shoes and that is what this blurb is also about.

I also bought a camera at Wal-Mart, that was missing some parts. In that case the Wal-Mart refused to let me return it and treated me like a criminal. I was going to sue them but I never got around it.

If Wal-Mart wants to advertise a return policy that says 100% satisfaction guaranteed they should carry out that policy, instead of treating people like criminals that return stuff, as I gripe about in this blurb.

Phoenix's 101 degree high on Monday should be the last triple-digit high for the next several days, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid- to lower 90s for the remainder of the week and into the weekend, said Mark O'Malley of the National Weather Service.

Monday morning, the cloud cover in Phoenix brought with it a light sprinkle of rain. Most of the rain evaporated before reaching the ground, the Weather Service said.

Higher elevation areas around the Valley could see some rain before the day is over, O'Malley said.

The Valley could see some moisture as Hurricane Miriam gains strength in the Pacific Ocean near south of the Baja California peninsula, the National Weather Service said. Just how much of the remnants of the Category 3 hurricane might affect Phoenix is relatively unknown, O'Malley said.

Some computer forecast models show the hurricane causing increased moisture near parts of central Arizona, while other models show the hurricane avoiding the state altogether, O'Malley said.

The exact track of the hurricane remainsunclear beyond the next couple of days, he said.

RFID tags used to keep track of books at the library

I saw a lady in the library using an interesting device to attach ID tags to books in the library.

The ID tags are those little paper tags with an RFID chip in them along with a tiny wire antenna wrapped around the chip to talk to a the control computer.

The lady was using a bar code reader to scan the books bar code.

Once the computer received the bar code would then spit out one of those ID tags.

As the ID tag was being spit out, the device had a little thing plugged into a USB port that looked like a thumb drive, but instead was a device to read the code on the RFID tag.

I suspect the device would then send the ID number of that RFID tag back to the computer so it could link the ID number of the RFID tag to the books number.

After the RFID tag was spit out the woman would then place the RFID tag on the back of the book.

The woman told me that the library was scrapping their old system which was used to keep track of books and replacing it with these new RFID tags.

Today when I went to the local Mexican grocery store for lunch the butcher gave me what looked like pickled chile tepin peppers. They were green instead of read. They were mixed with carrots and other stuff like a lot of Mexican pickles usually are.

They were very hot and very salty. They reminded me a lot of the achar pachranga pickles which are an Indian food I eat.

The article says that if you tell the government that you are a Christian they will increase your taxes and give the taxes they take from you to the religious domination that you selected.

If you ask me the idea of only paying for the government services that you choose to use sounds like a real good idea.
